NRSC Health and Safety Annex 6
         Grounds Maintenance

Purpose of this document:

​

To advise on health and safety when cutting grass, hedges and reeds with motor mower, hedge cutter, strimmer or other power tools.


General statement of risk:    

 

Risk of harm to arms, legs and other parts of the body from machinery: slips, trips and falls; noise; working next to water and drowning; risk from fuels and oils.

Detailed information:

 

A minimum of two people should be at the Anchorage during any work of this nature. Operatives must be physically fit to manage equipment safely and have satisfied Boatswain and or Coxswain of competence. Work is only tobe executed with the knowledge of the Boatswain and/or one of the two Coxswains. Operatives must have received premises induction. Recommendations for safety/best practice:

 

PPE to include ankle or wellington boots with toe and mid-sole protection; work gloves; ear-defenders; visor/safety 
glasses whilst strimming. Before commencing work, inspect plant for faults and damage; report any to Boatswain/Coxswain. Machines should be fuelled clear of the buildings with the appropriate fuel from the fuel store and without spillage. Machines to be started on level ground in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. Mow, 
cut hedges and strim slowly and carefully being wary of obstructions. Never expose mower blades or expose strimmer spool whilst the engines are running. Dispose of cuttings on the designated compost heap, not in the river. Ensure that machinery is reasonably clean and fuel taps are off before returning to the store. 


What to do in an emergency or when Club action is needed:

 

First Aid kits are situated prominently inside the Anchorage together with a list of First Aiders.  Operatives must be aware of the emergency, coastguard and ambulance calling procedure, also displayed prominently and highlighted in premises induction. Fire extinguishers and life buoys must be in position before commencement. At least one mobile phone should be available and in working order.
