NRSC Health and Safety Annex 8
       Fuel Safety and Storage

Purpose of this document:

​

To advise on Health and Safety when refuelling motor mower, hedge cutter, strimmer or other petrol-fuelled power tools; replacement /exchange of gas (LPG) containers. 


General statement of risk:    

 

Risk of harm to the body from fire and explosion; risk from fuels and oils.

Detailed information:

 

A minimum of two people should be at the Anchorage during any work of this nature. Operatives must be physically fit to manage equipment safely and have satisfied Boatswain and or Coxswain of competence. Work is only to be executed with the knowledge of the Boatswain and/or one of the two Coxswains. Operatives must have received premises induction. Petrol - Recommendations for safety/best practice :

 

Wear suitable gloves. Before commencing refuelling with petrol, inspect plant for faults and damage; report any to 
Boatswain/Coxswain. Machines should be fuelled clear of the buildings with the appropriate fuel from the fuel stores and without spillage. Return petrol containers to fuel store immediately after use.


LPG – Recommendations for safety/best practice:     

 

Ensure that all relevant isolating valves are off. Detach and release only completely empty bottle, taking carenot to damage flexible hose(s), regulators, valves etc. Transfer full bottle from storage cage and install with care, ensuring gas connection is tight. Remove empty gas bottle from site for replacement if practical, or inform Boatswain/Coxswain as 
soon as possible and replace in cage. Ensure cage is re-locked. 


What to do in an emergency or when Club action is needed :

 

First Aid kits are situated prominently inside the Anchorage together with a list of First Aiders. Operatives must be aware of the emergency, coastguard and ambulance calling procedure, also displayed prominently and highlighted in premises induction. Fire extinguishers and life buoys must be in position before commencement. At least one 
mobile phone should be available and in working order.
